APC Argues With Fayose About Ex-deputy Gov’s Tomb

<p><strong>The All Progressives Congress (APC) of Ekiti State accuses Governor Ayodele Fayose of desecrating the tomb of the late deputy governor of the state, Funmilayo Olayinka, The Punch reports. </strong></p> <p>The source notes that Olayinka served as deputy to former Governor Kayode Fayemi between October 16, 2010 and April 6, 2013, when she died of cancer.</p> <p><strong>READ ALSO: </strong><a href="http://bit.ly/1K3swKk" target="_blank">Fayose Urges Nigerians To Pray For Buhari</a></p> <p>The APC in its statement by local chairman D.O. Adigun says that the party expressed reservation that Fayose was building a women centre within the confine of the park and almost right on the tomb.</p> <p>The statement announces:  <em>“To us, this is a disservice and deliberate, extreme partisanship to fight and dishonour Moremi even in death. BREAKING: Naira Crashes To 241 Against Dollar

Very Sad! Read How Five Persons Die over Ramadan Gifts

<p><strong>Five persons have lost their lives in a stampede while waiting to collect Ramadan gifts from a businessman in Kaduna on Monday, July 13, The Punch reports.</strong></p> <p></p> <p><img alt="Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai" class="alignnone wp-image-449049" height="333" src="http://bit.ly/1HZrmwZ" width="500" /></p> <p>It was learnt that many others fainted during the stampede. A businessman,who deals in dairy products, was sharing gifts at the Kabala Constain area in Kaduna North local government area of the state, that attracted the huge crowd.</p> <p>An eyewitness at the venue said that large number of people flooded the venues where the gifts were been shared. Osun Workers Suspend Two-Month Strike

Fear AS Ebola Patients Escape Health Facility

Buhari Promises To Reform Oil Sector

Jonathan Bastardized Sacred And Traditional Institutions – NSCIA

<p><strong>The Secretary General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, has said that the ex-president Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s led administration bastardized almost everything, including the Sacred and our traditional institutions in his desperation to seek a second term in office.</strong></p> <p><img alt="goodluck-jonathan_2745283b_1" class="alignnone wp-image-449071 size-full" height="250" src="http://bit.ly/1czg85I" width="400" /></p> <p>The former Vice chancellor of the University of Ilorin, who said this while speaking various national issues, advised President Muhammadu Buhari not to end up like his predecessor.</p> <p>When asked about his feelings on the involvement of some religious leaders and religious bodies in the murky water of partisan politicking during the last general elections, he said: <em>“I don’t know what the definition of religious leaders is. But by whatever definition, I don’t consider myself a religious leader. I just consider myself as one of the operators of the system.</em></p> <p><em>“I believe that it’s not just religion. I believe that the last administration bastardized almost everything, including the Sacred and our traditional institutions. If we face the reality, you’ll know that they are not in the perception of the public. They are no longer what they used to be. Even politicians, nobody takes any politician seriously now. Even the so-called religious leaders could not have been an exception.</em></p> <p><em>“I believe that what happened was a bastardization of the system. It will take a person with a strong character to keep himself or herself out of the madness. As for me, I saw it as people being short-sighted. The whole thing will go as it has gone in one way or the other. But we should learn some lessons. The community, particularly are our Christian brothers who are unduly dragged unnecessarily for very selfish and personal reasons.</em></p> <p><em>“There were some credible leaders like Cardinal John Onaiyekan and Bishop Josiah Atkins Idowu-Fearon and others who took principled positions. But there were some others who were not hesitant in dragging religion into the dirty waters of politics. Of course, we heard rumors about our people too. Only God helped us with the last administration.</em></p> <p><em>“There was nothing sacred that was not touched; Christians against Muslims, Hausa against Beron, Beron against Igbo, Igbo against everything. They were just looking for anything that will pull the country down. I didn’t know why they had to do that. But we thank God that at the end of the day, it didn’t pay. Oshiomhole To EFCC: We Have Nothing To Hide

<p><strong>Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole has revealed that his government is readt to grant the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC access to its local government accounts for investigation.</strong></p> <p></p> <p>He was reacting to the call by the Edo chaper of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dan Orbih, for the EFCC to probe the state’s local government accounts.</p> <div id="attachment_447789" style="max-width: 600px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img alt="Governor Adams Oshiomhole " class="size-full wp-image-447789" height="549" src="http://bit.ly/1dWEA1j" width="600" /> <p class="wp-caption-text">Governor Adams Oshiomhole</p> </div> <p>Orbh had accused the Oshiomhole of the financial crisis facing the local government areas in Edo state.</p> <p>Orbih said:“We have more than enough materials to nail the corrupt practices of the political leaders in Edo State starting with the governor”.</p> <p>He said that council chairmen earn between N1.2million and N1.7 million each every month as security votes while their legislative arm of each councils earn around N1 million each as security votes.</p> <p>He also said that despite these sums, the money was nowhere near the over N500 million Mr. Oshiomhole draws monthly in security votes.<br /> <em>“Here is a governor asking council chairmen to forfeit N1.2 million per month but who cannot forfeit N500 million. The total security vote of the councils in a year is about what Oshiomhole collects every month.</em><br /> <em>“He brought this hardship upon the people and he is now trying to absolve himself. He impressed upon the council chairmen not to cry out but one good thing is that the Edo people already know the truth. <p><strong>Kaduna state Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai has practically suggested a revolutionary move: to scrap the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).</strong></p> <p>The politician expressed his position on the current state of things when he spoke on Monday, July 13, at the lecture held to mark Wole Soyinka’s birthday, Vanguard reports.</p> <p>El-Rufai lamented that the NNPC had over the years constituted itself as a parallel government, functioning in isolation from Nigeria. He further alleged that “death” of the Corporation had become a compulsory measure.</p> <p><em>“The long and short of the situation of our oil industry is best exemplified by the parallel government called the NNPC. As you might have read in the papers, while the federal government, under Goodluck Jonathan, with the then Coordinating Minister of the Economy liked to blame “Governors” for wasteful spending, for not saving for the rainy day, for not investing properly, the truth is the real weakness in the Nigerian federal chain has been the Federal Government. They shared the $2.1 billion based on the revenue allocation formula, Edo State got about N2.27 billion. So I said, thank God this money came after the departure of Okonjo-Iweala and President Jonathan. Busted! Policeman Who Leads A Robbery Gang Nabbed

<p><strong>A policeman, Sergeant Joseph Okweke, has been arrested for heading a robbery gang. Okweke, who is from Obuluku in Delta state, used to go for robbery operations with his police uniform, Eagle online reports.</strong></p> <p></p> <p>Attached to the Area ‘A’ Police Command, Lion Building, Campbell, Lagos Island, Lagos, Okweke revealed that wearing his uniform, makes it easier for him and his gang during their operations as people will naturally think that he is a law abiding officer.</p> <p><strong>READ ALSO:</strong><a href="http://bit.ly/1O1kRdi" target="_blank"> IGP Redeploys 27 Assistant Commissioners</a></p> <p>Okweke led a five-man gang of robbers, which specialised in attacking warehouses after overpowering the security guards. His men would start loading their vehicles with the goods from the warehouse.</em></p> <p><em>“A few hours after leaving the scene of the robbery, the sergeant would take the goods to Onitsha in Anambra State to sell to a buyer called Benjamin Osuozu. He used to escort the goods wearing his uniform. This will make policemen on the road not to flag him down to ask questions about the goods. Make Medical Workers Strike A Crime, Doctor Tells FG

It seems as if the medical officers, including doctors, nurses and others are addicted to strike and this is killing the system.</em></p> <p><em>“In 2014, doctors went on strike for over four months while JOHESU was on strike for about six months. Out of about 360 work days, hardly did they come to work for their legitimate duties for 120 days.</em></p> <p><em>“We cannot afford to abandon our responsibilities because we offer essential services</em>.”</p> <p>Ayodele  called on the striking doctors to returned to working adding that he had no plan to enforce ‘no-work-no-pay’ rule. It is saddening that we are losing lives here on a daily basis and we plead with our colleagues to resume work. UK Government Set To Ban Nigerian Students, Others From Working With Students Visa

<p><strong>Potential Nigerian students who want to school in the United Kingdom (UK) will be denied the opportunity to work while in the country.</strong></p> <p></p> <p class="mol-para-with-font">A new rule proposed by the British government is aimed at denying non-EU residents the right to work while in the UK even as they will will also not be able to apply for a visa extension when their course comes to an end.</p> <p class="mol-para-with-font">The rule also states that students will have to leave the UK before applying to return under a work visa, Daily Mail UK reports.</p> <p class="mol-para-with-font">The length of stay is also expected to be maximum of two years when the plans come on stream later this week.</p> <p class="mol-para-with-font">Britain’s Immigration Minister, James Brokenshire said the rule was <em>“part of our plan to control immigration for the benefit of Britain'”</em></p> <div class="mol-article-quote nochannel floatRHS"></div> <p class="mol-para-with-font"><em><span id="ext-gen183">“Immigration offenders want to sell illegal access to the UK jobs market and there are plenty of people willing to buy.</span></em></p> <p class="mol-para-with-font"><em>‘Hard-working taxpayers who are helping to pay for publicly funded colleges expect them to be providing top class education, not a back door to a British work</em> <em>visa,”</em> he concluded.</p> <p>But universities in the country have kicked against the government’s plans, they warned that the new rule could damage the sector and business leaders and rob Britain of vital skills from foreign students.</p> <p>But the government seem hell-bent on going ahead with its plans. The applicant has liberty to life while in the custody of the Nigerian Police but was denied, thereby leading to her life being terminated. If she had access to hospital she would not have died, but the police deprived her the right to visit hospital to treat her ailment. <p><strong>Aderemi Opadokun, Borno state police commissioner, on Monday, July 13, confirmed Boko Haram attacks launched in Monguno local government area.</strong></p> <p>The insurgents stormed Kalwa, Misala and Gwollam villages of the LGA, shooting locals and slitting their throats.</p> <p>The bloodshed which took place over the weekend claimed at least 43 lives, Premium Times reports with reference to residents and a local security official. But we assure the public that patrol is in progress in the said area.”</em></p> <p>Haruna Bukar, a vigilante in the area, narrated how locals were suffering from insurgency in Monguno:</p> <p><em>“Many villages under Monguno local government areas are being attacked almost on daily basis. Boko Haram terrorists had on Friday night attacked Misala and Kalwa, which are two neighboring villages. The two villages are located not more than 17km from Monguno town on the way to Marte.</em></p> <p><em>“They operated for hours on that night while setting houses ablaze. At the end of the deadly operation, 43 persons were found dead either killed by gunshots or slaughtered like animals. President Buhari: Slowly Grinding Nigeria Forward Or Just Slowly Doing Nothing?

<p><strong>Editor’s note:</strong> <em>To find balance between those who say Muhammadu Buhari is moving too slow and those who tend to <a href="http://bit.ly/1Ruq8jK" target="_blank">shower him in prais</a>e just a little over one month since he has taken the seat, the <a href="http://bit.ly/1IHfsUV" target="_blank">Naij.com columnist</a> <a href="http://bit.ly/1Ruq5Vh" target="_blank">Japheth Omojuwa</a> makes an <a href="http://bit.ly/1HqKSyT" target="_blank">assessment</a> of the President Buhari-led administration’s successes and slip-ups.</em></p> <p></p> <p><em>This article expresses the author’s opinion only. The views and opinions expressed here do not necessarily represent those of Naij.com or its editors.</em></p> <p><strong>Story highlights:</strong></p> <p><em>—  Six weeks into the new administration, it is still too early to evaluate the Buhari-led administration, but enough to tell if they are moving in the right direction</em></p> <p><em>— President Buhari’s administration assessed on the grounds of national security, foreign reserve, fuel supply, auditing of the ministries, cutting the costs of governance and making money</em></p> <p><em>— “Each move of the administration must be contextualized against the immediate and long-term effects,” Omojuwa says</em></p> <h4>Too early?</h4> <p>President Buhari has been <a href="http://bloom.bg/1HD34o8" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">referred to</a> as <a href="http://bit.ly/1Ruq6bu" target="_blank">“Baba Go Slow”</a> by a reputable international media platform. That landed well with those who always looked for an opportunity to scream <em>“We told you so!”</em> in apparent reference to <i>their</i> fact that Buhari was not the best candidate for Nigeria. We have since crossed that bridge of <em>“who is the better candidate between Muhammadu Buhari or Goodluck Jonathan,”</em>  but you must agree that those who decided to stay in the election battle mode have a given right under the constitution to continue to live in that immediate past.</p> <p>This is not about some people’s emotional attachment to what <em>might have been</em>, but a clear attempt at reviewing the Buhari administration over the last six weeks of its inception.</p> <p>Really and truly, six weeks is too short a time to take stock of a president’s reign; but, seeing as most people are desperate to score the administration, it would be okay for us to at least help them keep score. This is of course not about scoring the administration, in terms of whether or not it is doing well so far, but about outlining some of its moves against the accusations of “nothing is happening.”</p> <h4>Progress in the first six weeks</h4> <p>What concerns <em><a href="http://bit.ly/1HD31Zs" target="_blank">national security</a></em>, things have indeed gotten worse against the relative calm of the last few weeks of the Jonathan administration. <a href="http://bit.ly/1HmC9Qw" target="_blank">Boko Haram</a> has been on rampage, and we have lost some 600 people to the insurgents. No matter what the government’s excuses are, it is unacceptable. The government needs to activate its agenda against terrorism. Long-term strategies must be met with immediate term exigencies. The engagement with the G7, where Nigeria played a respectable part in Germany, counts for something, but the real deal would be the results such an engagement brings to bear in the fight against terrorism. One hopes that the latest <a href="http://bit.ly/1O6y5q1" target="_blank">sacking of the service chiefs</a> is in line with the government’s attempt to refocus the fight against terrorism.</p> <p>There is a knife that cuts both ends of the divide one must highlight. What you must note at all times is this: Buhari’s detractors will always be quick to point out his failings, Buhari’s supporters will always be quick to point out his successes, but what must matter to you in the end if you care about Nigeria’s sustainable progress is to look beneath the noise and see what really should count for progress and what should not <em>mutatis mutandis</em> failure.</p> <p>The <em><a href="http://bit.ly/1HD34o9" target="_blank">foreign reserve</a></em> has gone up a notch over the last six weeks. The last administration left the foreign reserve at the lowest it had been for a decade but the numbers have since picked up a couple billion dollars. That is refreshing and worthy of note but it means nothing really. The long-term status of the foreign reserve matters more than periodic perturbations.</p> <p><em>Fuel supplies</em> have been a critical issue in Nigeria, and <em>fuel scarcity</em> was so prevalent towards the end of the last administration that <em>scarcity</em> indeed became the normal state of things. The fuel subsidy scam of 2011 remains the biggest heist in recent memory and most of it was caused by the granting of importation licenses to briefcase companies who were allegedly aligned to the last administration, with the 2011 elections in mind. There were 128 marketers at the time, most of them companies that were only running inside the briefcases of government cronies. The heist apart, the increased number of charlatan marketers also resulted in intermittent scarcity over the years. That is expected to change for the better with the Buhari government having now cut away the briefcase companies from the importation process. Only twenty-nine companies will import fuel this quarter against the forty-three that did last quarter. This does not solve the problem entirely, but it is a right step in the right direction. What the government has simply done is clean the corruption stable in anticipation of what one hopes will be the complete reregulation of the downstream sector. The refineries are expected to be in operation soon, so the conditions for deregulation are very much in place now. The most important condition is the president’s obvious intolerance for corruption and corrupt people. There is a movement forward here but it would matter more if that movement ends with government’s ending of fossil fuel subsidies. The resources can be better channeled into critical sectors like <em><a href="http://bit.ly/1HD34oa" target="_blank">education</a></em> and <em>agriculture</em>.</p> <p>The current <em>auditing of the ministries</em> before the <a href="http://bit.ly/1Ruq6bv" target="_blank">appointment of ministers</a> is a step in the right direction. Another good step would be the reduction of the ministries. We really must do more than verbal commitments to the reduction in the size of government; such statements must be met with credible action. The governments of <a href="http://bit.ly/1HD31Zz" target="_blank">Kaduna</a> and Kano have already shown some direction on that front by reducing the number of ministries drastically, and the governors, along with some of their conterparts who later followed suit, cutting their salaries. The president and the vice president have since announced <a href="http://bit.ly/1Ruq6bw" target="_blank">similar cuts</a>, but such will not be far reaching if we do not reduce the number of government ministries and agencies.</p> <p>The current administration’s <em><a href="http://bit.ly/1LEmHDo" target="_blank">making the money from liquefied natural gas</a> available</em> was reported to be the first time that would happen in over two decades, according to House of Representative member, Hon. Dr. Abdulmumin Jibrin. On his part, Yusuf Tuggar, a chieftain of the APC, stated that previous earnings from NLNG were deposited into a secret Morgan Chase account in Chicago, USA. There are already calls for President Buhari to probe this and other claims on what the immediate past administration did with earnings from NLNG.</p> <h4>Is the Buhari government moving in the right direction?</h4> <p>As you would see, there is a lot to do. It is too early for anyone to praise or knock the new government, but what is never early or late is to see the direction of the government. Each move of the administration must be contextualized against the immediate and long-term effects. That is what a citizen who cares more about the country than the government would look at. That is what those who know the interest of Nigeria is above that of those who wished they had won the last elections would look at. Nigerian Professional Football League Immortalizes Rashidi Yekini

<p><strong>The highest goal scorer award during the close season of the Nigerian Professional Football Leage (NPFL) has been renamed the Rashidi Yekini award the League Management Company (LMC) chairman Shehu Dikko has said.</strong></p> <p><img alt="Rashidi Yekini" class="alignnone wp-image-487436 size-large" height="479" src="http://bit.ly/1CAjAcZ" width="800" /></p> <p>The Cable Nigeria quotes him saying:<em>“There is a broad plan to institute awards and honour outstanding players, officials, key stakeholders and fans in the league at the end of every season and there are a number of factors that led us to reach the decision to name one of these awards, that of the highest goal scorer after the late Rashidi Yekini.</em></p> <p><em>“The awards are part of strategic plans of the LMC to create commercial value and additional revenues out of the assets inherent in the league property,”</em> he said.</p> <div><em>“We considered the aspiration factor which seeks to let the players know that they too can become national heroes if they achieve excellence and make a success of their career. He revealed the LMC were in negotiations wit corporate firms on their potential participation in the NPFL Awards.</div> <p>Yekini started his career with United Textile Mills Limited (UNTL) Kaduna before joining IICC Shooting Stars, now Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan.</p> <p>He later moved to the defunct Abiola Babes before he joined Africa Sports of Cote d’Ivoire. The 1993 Africa Footballer of the Year scored 37 goals in 58 games for the Super Eagles. <p><strong>An Ikeja Senior Magistrates’ Court 4 has remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri, Apapa-Lagos, a suspect, Peter Gregory who allegedly raped a dog meat seller, Mrs. Blessing Sunday Udoh.</strong></p> <p></p> <div id="attachment_487407" style="max-width: 259px" class="wp-caption alignnone"><img alt="Maximum Prison" class="size-full wp-image-487407" height="194" src="http://bit.ly/1CAjC4q" width="259" /> <p class="wp-caption-text">Maximum Prison</p> </div> <p><strong>READ ALSO:</strong> <a class="row-title" href="http://bit.ly/1eWJQmz" target="_blank" title="Edit “Police Cry Out Over Increasing Cult Groups In Lagos”">Police Cry Out Over Increasing Cult Groups In Lagos</a></p> <p>According to the victim, Gregory came to her dog meat shop recently at about 8:30pm and pretended he wanted to buy dog meat. But when she told him she had finished her sales stock for the day, the suspect picked the knife in her shop and threatened to kill her if she resisted his sexual advances.</p> <p>She gave in and the suspect had his way. When her husband returned, she reported the rape to him and police was contacted.</p> <p>The police prosecutor, Inspector Rachael Williams in charge pf number MIK/E/02/2015 she filed against Gregory, alleged he committed the rape recently at 25 Ajegunle Street, Ajegunle Lagos when she threatened 20-year old Mrs. Udoh with a knife before raping her.</p> <p>The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.</p> <p>The presiding Chief Magistrate, Mr. Tajudeen A. Elias admitted Gregory to bail in the sum of N200,000 with one responsible surety in like sum who must show evidence of tax payment, LASRRA paper.
