A prison in the southern Niger town of Diffa yesterday came under attack from suspected members of the Boko Haram sect.

The militants who had the intention to free its fellow members in the prison were repelled by the country’s military. During the gun battle, three of the militants and one soldier were killed. Boko Haram also attacked the prison in February.

“When the attack was repelled, the assailants fled, probably back into the town, we are searching for them.” one military source told Reuters.

Another military source squealed that the attackers may have been staying in the town for a while, but added that no one had seen them enter the town.

Despite losing its major camps and territories to an offensive by the Nigerian, Chadian and Nigerien military, Boko Haram has carried out a wave of deadly attacks in the three countries in recent weeks.

The group has since sworn allegiance to Islamic State, which has declared an Islamic caliphate in the large parts of Iraq and Syria that it controls.

Meanwhile, a man who is suspected to be a Boko Haram member and a potential suicide bomber was arrested by the Chadian military in N’djamena, the Chad capital city today.
